Parent’s FAQs

An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men’s and women’s lacrosse. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball. What else do you need to know?

  • At what age can my son/daughter start playing lacrosse?
    • Answer – Our youngest players, ages 5-6, start with the “Softstick” program. Our regular lacrosse age groups are U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14 and High School. Players can start playing lacrosse at any age, and we have players start playing lacrosse at all age groups.
  • How do you determine to what age group a player is assigned?
    • Answer – We establish a player’s team assignment based on their age with September 1 as the cut-off date. Example: To play U-13, the player must be 12 or younger last August 31. (this age-group designation went into effect on Jan 1, 2012)
  • Where are your HRLax league games played?
    • Answer – We play games at various locations including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Newport News, Norfolk, and Suffolk.
  • I am interested in coaching, how do I get involved?
    • Answer – We encourage any lacrosse enthusiast to become involved. All you have to do is complete the form listed on our contact page and just tell us you want to be involved.
  • Where can I purchase lacrosse equipment/gear for my son/daughter?
    • Answer – There are many online retailers who offer lacrosse equipment, as well as some local retailers. • How can my son/daughter become a game referee?
    • Answer – Once they enter high school, they are eligible to referee our youth level games. All referees are provided extensive training via the HR Lacrosse Officials/Referees training program. Referees are compensated for their time but are responsible to provide their own uniforms. All you have to do is contact any of the representatives listed on our officials page and just tell us you want to be involved.
  • Are lacrosse games played in the rain?
    • Answer – Yes, lacrosse is an all-weather sport. Unless the weather is extreme, expect games to be played. Your first method for information regarding game-day decisions is to contact your team’s coach. Your coach will be in contact with the area rep to determine if the games are going to be played. Lightning – At the first sight of lightning, ALL players, coaches, and parents will move from the field to an area of safety. Games will not resume until 30 minutes after the last sighting of lightning.
  • Can my son/daughter play lacrosse and soccer/tennis/baseball etc?
    • Answer – Obviously the league would prefer your son/daughter concentrate on lacrosse throughout the season, but we realize that many younger players have multiple desires. Please work with your coach regarding practices and games as communication is key.

    • Answer – The Tidewater Chapter of US Lacrosse is the local chapter of US Lacrosse, the National Governing Body for Lacrosse. US Lacrosse is the national governing body for men’s and women’s lacrosse, primarily serving the youth (under 19) game. All 63 US Lacrosse Chapters are charged with inspiring participation while protecting the integrity of the sport, and as such, encouraging area lacrosse activities and events. Since 1995 the Chapter has provided and encouraged local lacrosse playing opportunities for the entire Hampton Roads area of South Eastern Virginia stretching from Williamsburg to the OBX, and Suffolk to Va. Beach.

The Tidewater Chapter is a 501c.3 nonprofit corporation, an “All Volunteer” organization encouraging, fostering, and promoting the growth of lacrosse in the Hampton Roads area. All leadership and staff donate their time to support the integrity and growth of the game. The Tidewater Chapter does not administer our league (HRLax).

  • What is HRLax, the lacrosse league?
    • Answer – The league has four divisions providing lacrosse opportunities for girls’ and boys’ youth players (ages 7 through 14), and girls’ and boys’ High School players (for public school students). The league also provides a Co-ed Softstick program for players ages 5-6. The league is a spring league with practices beginning in February with games running from March through May.

All registration fees are used for league, team, and game expenses including game fields, team equipment, referees/officials, youth uniforms, the offsetting league-required coach training, mandatory coach background checks, and registration expenses. All coaches volunteer their time and efforts to increase the local lacrosse knowledge.

HRLax’s league is in compliance with US Lacrosse’s National Youth Rules and Standards and requires coaches to complete Positive Coaching Alliance training, complete the US Lacrosse Level 1 course in age-appropriate lacrosse instruction, and successfully clear a background check from the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI).
